I took a scheduled day off of work on Monday to pore over submissions, of which we’ve received around 200 as of Star Wars Day 2024.

We’ve offered thirteen contracts and have received twelve; we’ve paid out $25 USD on eleven, and one author offered his fee to be plugged back into the process. Expenses to date, including processing fees: $283.09

Present total word count: approximately 34,200.

I won’t begin editing in earnest until I’ve gotten more of the submissions and the school year ends. I’ve built a few spreadsheets and am tracking contracts, payments, submissions, acceptances, communications, author bios, and more.

It’s struck me how akin to putting together a concert setlist is this building of an anthology thing. I’m accepting pieces thinking: “This funny piece will be a nice breather after that heavy emotional thing before it…” or “This short one will follow the two longer ones to give the reader a break…” and that sort of thing. I’m categorizing all accepted stories by sub-sub-genres so that I can ensure congruity where desired and variability where that’ll be helpful.

Feel free to shoot me an email with any thoughts or questions you might have about this process. editor [at] whisperhousepress [dot] com

Does one “pore over” or “pour over” submissions?   Just askin?
